THINKING
OF BECOMING ACTIVE WITHIN UNISON?
UNISON is a lay member led union and depends
on the membership to make it an effective organisation.
You can become active at a number of levels and
in a number of roles.
- Branch Officers: Elected each year at the AGM, they carry
out specific functions. For a list of our Current branch Officers,
see the 'Contact Us' page
- Stewards: Your first point of call within the union if
you have a problem. They are essential cogs that make the union
work, without them, the whole thing would grind to a halt. Our
aim is to have a Steward in each workplace (at the moment we are
well short of that).
- Health and Safety Reps: Have specific knowledge and experties
in Health and Safety matters. They have extensive rights, as laid
down in the 'Safety Repsresentatives and Safety Committee regulations
1977'. In some cases the H&S Rep and the Steward are the same
person, but they have very different roles within the union.
- Workplace Contacts: Do not have the same rights as Stewards,
but are a vital link between the membership and the 'organisation'.
They help keep the membership up to date with what is going on
and pass information on, distibute news letters etc.
- Self Organised Groups: SOGs are groups of members who
often face discrimination get together to share resources, they
include:
- Black members
- Disabled members
- Lesbian and gay members
- Women members
